how MINI changed their emails

How MINI have changed their emails during a rebrand

MINI have been going through a rebranding process for a while now and it seems to be a phased approach happening gradually. It’s no surprise their emails have gone through some changes as well to mirror this transition, so I’m going to be focusing on one of their emails and the transition it has gone through in design over the last six months. The Rebrand The overarching change has been the rebrand, which seems to have moved on from the previous, bold, in-your-face, young and fun vibe to something a little more grown-up. I also know that, where all of the previous emails tended to fit the same format and layout, the new ones vary in style. They have developed…

Use concise email design to improve campaign results

To improve the effectiveness of your emails it is important to not overwhelm users with choice and to not include any content with duplicate links. This concise approach to email design will not only improve the results of your campaigns but also reduce the time it takes to create them. Keep things simple People can easily be paralysed by choice. It’s easy to be quickly overwhelmed with possible options. The process of incrementally introducing information or options has been something the web has done well for decades now. You don’t need to show every colour shoe in your email. Sell some shoes first, get the person to visit your store and only then should concise email design slowly, incrementally offer…

List growth today

Target your sign up messaging for a high quality email list Great sales and marketing programs deserve a great audience both in size and quality, so it is understandable that that lists and data quality are in the top three of priorities for marketers this year. If we want to increase our email list growth, where do we look? I oftentimes refer to a running joke from the services industry. It goes something like this: Our services are : 1) Cheap, 2) Fast, and 3) high quality. Pick two. It holds a lot of truth, often those three options don’t line up together, luckily there are ways to growing your email list while retaining quality. Your strategy for promoting signups…

Email blasts are dead…

The talk is all about marketing automation nowadays. On a group of email geeks, or leading email proponents, depending on your view that I hang out in called Only Influencers the question was asked this week; are email blasts dead? This led to an interesting debate which, to my mind, completely debunked the myth which is marketing automation. For me, marketing automation is a term, thought up by email marketing companies who want to muddy the waters enough to get a foothold in the market. Let me explain; almost from the inception of email broadcasting companies like Saber Software (who became e2 communications) were using “marketing automation” to sell software services online – only they called it adaptive sequenced messaging…

Gmail changes the game for email (again!)

Some of you will have spotted a trial of a grid-style (almost Pinterest-like) visual inbox for the Promotions tab in Gmail. The Promotions tab (where all marketing emails now generally end up) now displays thumbnails allowing users to see elements of your marketing emails. As a trial, Google needs to determine its success prior to a full roll-out and this success looks like it will be based around ad revenues as the first image is actually an ad, not an email (as is the existing differently coloured first listing in the current Promotions tab format). The appearance of the ad in the grid format is more subtle than the current listing format and will be contextual based on the emails…

The Future of Email

Anytime and anywhere Everywhere you look people are engrossed in smartphones and tablets – public transport, coffee shops, parks and open spaces – even walking down the street. We use them over lunch, we use them to compare prices whilst out shopping, we use them whilst at home watching TV – where a massive 81% of us ‘stack’ (conduct unrelated media tasks while consuming media content) and ‘mesh’ (use multiple devices simultaneously to enhance a media experience) so our attention is constantly divided. We use our smartphones and tablets to consume media, tell friends what we’re up to on social networks and, of course, we use them to check our emails. In fact, the number of mobile e-mail users is…
